Before it’s too late:
The Research Expedition
Will Second Life really be shut down at the end of the year?
One currently hears this rumor over and over again - admittedly from unauthorized
sources. With the massive flight of businesses it is said that
the owners of Second Life
are
running out of money. And since
no business reports exist, nobody knows if
Second
Life is
actually making any profit. What will happen if worst comes to worst, if Second Life will
be shut down by the end of the year?
Will the 1½ million surviving avatars and the 14 million account
corpses
lose all they own? Will there be
nothing left of the glorious digital
dream of mankind - except
for a few jpgs?
>>>
Second Life Researchers are trying to
reconstruct the
original everyday-life in
Second Life
on the basis of the many abandoned
buildings. In small literary research reports they are
recording what they have found
(
virtual ground samples,
imagined animal breeds, extraordinary observations) and are
submitting their own conclusions
concerning former life in the de-
serted and avatar-free zones. They are also describing the hardships
of their expeditions, or maybe even
chance encounters with isolated natives.
They are bitterly arguing about whether there really once was a civilization at all or if -
like some downers among them claim - their research object is only a
failed dream of the
builders of Second Life,
the numerous virtual landowners. As modern wanderers above the digital
sea of fog they may be sitting in front of their screens,
projecting their feelings and their hopes into
the empty virtual world, shaping it according to those needs.
But which hopes were (or are) these?
In September 2009, a research station is built in Second Life and a blog will be installed here on this site.
Both will serve as base camp for the leader of the expedition, Muji Zapedzki, and her colleagues.
On October 11 at 2 p.m., the
solemn opening of the research station will be transmitted live to
Hainfeld Castle
in Austria during the
European Literature Days 2009
The expedition itself starts on October 1. It will be
open for all interested persons. Everybody
can -
after a short informal application - join the research team, publish his or her own reports on
the weblog and scurry away again. These reports will be linked to the described SL-Zones, including photos or films.
All researchers will regularly meet at the research station. The head of the research team can also - if requested - run
individual group
expeditions. At the end of November, results of the expedition will be reported at a
multi media press conference in Bremen at the
Central Library to the First Life public and in February 2010 in
Cluj, Romania.

Become a Member of the Expedition Team!
As a member of the expedition team, you can follow the construction of the spartan base camp in Second Life or even take part in building it.
From September 1 onwards, your avatar will have access to the building site. From October 1, you will be able to
publish your own research reports, photos and videos on the blog. You will be given a jeep as a gift.
As a host, you can participate in all the virtual events of the team. But naturally everybody will understand if your
research job does not allow you to fool around with such trivial social events. Expedition leader Muji Zapedzki will regu- larly invite all
participating researchers to inspirational internal meetings at the base camp.
The best German-language reports will be presented to the public at a multi media press conference in Bremen on November 25;
the best ones in English in February 2010 in Cluj (Romania). One of them could be yours!
You can join or cancel your membership at any time. Just write a short e-mail to muji[at]movement-for-account-corpses.de. Please introduce yourself with a few words and let us know how much experience you have with Second Life. You will then receive further instructions.
I’m looking forward to your application!

Unique preventive demo against the (possible) closure of Second Life
Experience teaches: Many demonstrations happen too late! Ours doesn't. We are there before Linden Lab can even fathom shutting down
Second Life. We, the residents of Second Life, will gather in front of Linden Lab headquarters to give them hell. The motto is:
"Shut down Second Life? Don’t even dream of it!"
Make as many posters as possible, create
coffins, avatar fetuses, whatever - the more drastic, the better!
For a warm-up, those of you speaking German are invited to come to the
official inauguration of the re- search station at at 2 p.m. (CEST).
Expedition leader Muji Zapedzki will introduce the station to the public and present the first reports.
The opening will be trans- mitted live during the European Literature Days in Hain- feld Castle, Austria.
Please join in large numbers!
Later we can go for a short cross-country cruise with 3D-jeeps and at 3 p.m. (CEST) we will gather at the Linden Lab headquarters.
Yours, Muji Zapedzki
